Plant Metallurgist - Aluminum Emphasis

We are currently looking for a skilled Plant Metallurgist - Aluminum Emphasis to join our Quality team at our Salt Lake manufacturing facility.


Primary Job Duties

  • Act as Company Subject Matter Expert for aluminum materials and processing
  • Conduct process audits and ensure industry best practices are employed throughout the facility
  • Write and review procedures and work instructions
  • Define specifications, define and write test procedures to qualify new materials, suppliers, and processes
  • Provide metallurgical troubleshooting to existing production lines
  • Support Manufacturing on existing production processes and equipment to reduce scrap and improve yield
  • Lead identification and implementation of cost reductions through new processes, equipment and automation
  • Support Quality for all metallurgical-related issues
  • Collaborate with Sourcing to identify and qualify new suppliers, as well as resolve existing production and quality issues
  • Act as a mentor/coach to educate colleagues in metallurgy, technologies and processes

Desired Characteristics

  • Extensive background in aluminum metal processing including welding, mechanical drawing, heat treating, and anodizing
  • Ability to work with suppliers on materials-related issues
  • Approachable personality with the ability to lead and work effectively in cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication skills, with ability to convey ideas to all levels from senior staff through production operators, who may have poor English language skills
  • Excellent trainer and on-the-job educator, willing to explain the rationale behind the decision so others can increase their metallurgical knowledge
  • Excellent documentation skills, including technical writing and creation of procedures
  • Self-starter, driven to accomplishments and results
  • Good design and analytical skills complemented with a hands-on approach
  • Ability to work under pressure, deal with setbacks, meet demanding project schedules
  • Well organized with the ability to juggle multiple assignments and shifting priorities
  • Demonstrated track record of problem-solving and troubleshooting

Education/Experience

  • BS (MS preferred) in Metallurgical Engineering, with emphasis on the physical metallurgy of aluminum alloys
  • 5-10 years progressive experience in aluminum materials and processes, preferably in high volume consumer products
  • Hands on experience with various aluminum processes, especially welding, drawing, heat treating and anodizing
  • Experience with laboratory mechanical testing
  • Experience with metallography
  • General metallurgical knowledge, including ferrous materials, tungsten alloys, machining, heat treating, plating
  • Proven knowledge of root cause / corrective action methodology and techniques
  • Solid knowledge of industrial statistics, SPC, DOE
  • Functional knowledge of Process Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (PFMEA)
  • High level of proficiency with MS software, especially Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint
  • Experience working in an ISO certified facility
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing
